A mobile phone camera is a mobile phone with built-in camera features which is quite commonly used by several elevator filmers to film elevators. They use this when there are security personnel or attendants in elevators, or when their digital cameras are broken or out of battery power. Some elevator filmers like to use this as a secondary video recording device but some also like to use it as a primary recording device.

Benefits[]

  • Easy to film elevators that has an attendant or operator, as the elevator operator won't notice if someone is filming the elevator.
  • Some mobile phones (especially smartphones) have high video and image resolutions.
  • Some mobile phones (usually Android phones) have direct upload to YouTube, making it easier and quicker for elevator filmers to upload their elevator videos without having to upload them via computers.
  • Some mobile phones (usually iPhone via iMovie and Android using Videoshow, Inshot or FilmoraGo and some newer OPPO and Realme smartphones with SoLoop video editor pre-installed) can edit videos via app without going edit via PC.
  • Some mobile phones camera (notable smartphones brand such as Samsung, OPPO, Realme and Xiaomi) as good as DSLR camera (up to 200 megapixels)
  • Some network providers offers unlimited quota internet (either limited speed or maximum speed) can now upload directly via mobile phones without worrying about out of quota. Even on the go or outside internet cable coverage.
  • Some smartphones nowadays can now record high quality video up to 4K (2160p) or 8K (4320p).
  • Some smartphones provides low light photo and video shooting options to make photo and video brighter in low light area, especially inside the elevator with low light.
  • Several smartphones (usually premium flagship) provides HDR video recording such as Dolby Vision (iPhone 13 series onwards) and HDR10+ (mostly premium flagship Android device such as Galaxy S20 series onwards) which provides colour more vibrant than normal video recording.

Detriments[]

  • Some elevator filmers have to rotate their mobile phones due to their large touch screens.
  • Relatively basic or cheaper mobile phones have very low megapixels (usually 5 megapixels or less).
  • Most mobile phone cameras are inferior to stand-alone cameras or camcorders. Variable frame-rates and poor image stabilization are also detriments to using a mobile phone.
  • The small image sensors and lens produce grainy or dark images in low-light or indoor conditions (including elevators) due to software making it brighter.
  • In some case, phone ringtones, alert tones and vibrations are also recorded during recording processes, unless the phone is set to Silent or Airplane Mode.
  • Some smartphone (mostly entry level smartphone) have video lag and sometime the camera app will crash unexpectedly anytime during record the video due to low in memory (RAM).
  • The video may stop recording if incoming calls happened anytime during recording (if network provider have enough signal inside the elevator).
  • Smartphones are often harder to pull videos off of than cameras, since dedicated cameras usually have easily serviceable (micro/mini)SD cards.
  • Most smartphones nowadays are non-removable and cannot change the battery on the go, unlike most cameras, which often have a battery compartment where the battery can easily be removed, and secondary/replacement units are readily available. (this problem is solvable by using a power bank or any other power source if they bring their charger along to charge in their own car or at coffee shop or restaurant such as Starbucks and McDonald's)
  • Some cheaper or older mobile phones doesn't have EIS/OIS (video stabilizer) which makes videos shaky. Some mid end or high end budget mobile phones/smartphones, EIS/OIS is only available at lower resolution (1080p/720p@30fps and/or 60fps) and not available in 4K@30fps and/or 4K@60fps (if that phone supports 4K/2160p resolution).
  • Android 10 and lower does limit the Video recording to 4GB due to the 32 bit Software limit however it will be lifted in Android 11 which means that Lift Filmers are able to record in a higher quality and bitrate
  • Some smartphone (usually newer and flagship Android phones from 2021 onwards and all iPhones) impossible to add storage due to no microSD slot built-in which might lead phone out of storage to store more videos, photos and apps. Some Android phones have 2 slots instead of 3 slots which need to choose between either 2 SIMs or 1 SIM+microSD. Considered getting a bigger storage is highly recommended.
  • Most smartphones tend to overheating while recording videos in a long run. Some smartphones may stopped recording if it reaches certain amount of heat on the phone during recording and unable to record any videos until phone is cooldown.
  • Several smartphones might have video recording or photo bug such as camera app crash, distorted audio after recording, etc. This usually can be fixed in the next system update, factory reset (requires backup important files before doing factory reset) or clear all data from the camera app.
